Privacy policy
What Bantefa collects when you use the Bantefa apps and bantefa.com, why, who else handles it, how long we keep it, and your rights under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (NDPA).
Last updated 23 October 2026.
Who we are
Bantefa records lectures on your phone, transcribes them and writes notes. For the data in this policy, Bantefa is the data controller. You can reach us at [email protected].
What we collect
- Your sign-in. Your name, your email address and the account id Apple or Google gives us when you sign in. If you use Apple's Hide My Email, we get Apple's relay address instead of yours.
- Your recordings. The audio you record in the app, sent to our server a minute at a time while you record.
- What we make from them. Transcripts with word timings, the notes, and the deadlines found in each lecture, plus the moments you flag by knocking on your phone.
- Your timetable. The classes, times, venues and lecturers you add. If you fill it in from a photo, a document or pasted text, we read it to suggest your classes and don't keep the file.
- Your deadlines. Deadlines found in your lectures and ones you add, and whether you've ticked them done or muted them.
- Your questions. Questions you ask about your lectures, typed or spoken, so we can answer them and count them against your plan.
- Your classes. Classes you create or join: the school, course, lecturer and level, and who the members are.
- Your devices. Your phone's push token, so we can send reminders, and the platform and name of each device you're signed in on. A one-way code made from your phone's id, so each phone gets one free trial.
- Your payments. What you bought, when, the amount and the payment reference. Card and bank details go to Paystack, Apple or Google, never to us.
We don't collect your contacts or your location, we don't show ads, and we don't sell your data.
This website keeps your sign-in in your browser's local storage. It runs no analytics and sets no cookies of its own. Google, Apple and Paystack may set their own when you use their sign-in or payment windows.
Why we use it
We use your data to give you the service you signed up for: to record, transcribe and write up your lectures, find your deadlines and remind you of them, remind you before classes, share notes inside the classes you join, answer your questions, and run your plan. The legal basis is the contract between us.
Before your first recording, the app also asks for your clear consent to send your recordings and transcripts to servers outside Nigeria (see below). You can take it back by deleting your recordings or your account. Without it, Bantefa can't write notes for you.
We don't use your recordings, transcripts or notes to train AI models. We use Google's paid Gemini service, whose terms say Google doesn't use what we send it to improve its products.
Who handles your data
Our own server stores your data and runs our own transcriber, so most of the time your audio is transcribed without leaving our machine. These services handle some of it for us:
- Google (Gemini). Writes the notes, answers your questions, reads timetable photos, and transcribes audio when our transcriber can't. Its servers are outside Nigeria.
- Groq. Transcribes a piece of audio when our transcriber is busy. Its servers are outside Nigeria.
- Apple and Google. Sign-in, payments in the App Store and Google Play, and delivering notifications to your phone.
- Expo. Passes our reminders to Apple and Google to deliver.
- RevenueCat. Keeps the record of plans bought in the App Store and Google Play.
- Paystack. Takes payments on this website.
- Cloudflare. Runs our domain and carries traffic to our servers.
Some of these are outside Nigeria, so your data leaves the country. We do this with your consent and under each provider's data protection terms, as the NDPA allows. We'll update this list when it changes.
Who else sees it
- Nobody, by default. Your recordings and notes are private to you.
- Your classmates, when you share. If you record into a class, its members can read that lecture's notes, transcript and deadlines: in full if they subscribe, a preview if they don't. Your audio is never shared, and nothing is ever public.
- When a lecturer asks. If a lecturer asks us to take a class's notes down, its lectures go back to being private to the students who recorded them.
- When the law requires it. We share data when a court order or another lawful request requires it.
How long we keep it
- Audio: 7 days, or 90 days on Plus so you can play it back. Then we delete it.
- Transcripts, notes, deadlines and your timetable: until you delete them or your account.
- Website sign-ins: they end after 30 days without a visit.
- After you delete your account: payment records stay, without your name or email, because accounting rules require them. The one-way code of your phone's id stays too, so a deleted account can't start a new free trial.
Deleting your data
You can delete a recording in the app at any time. To delete your account and everything in it, use Account in the app, or go to bantefa.com/delete-account. Deleting your account:
- deletes your recordings, audio, transcripts, notes, deadlines and timetable, including lectures you shared into a class
- passes any class you created to its oldest member
- signs you out everywhere and stops your website plan renewing
A plan bought in the App Store or Google Play has to be cancelled in the store.
Your rights
Under the NDPA you can:
- ask what data we hold about you, and get a copy
- have wrong data corrected
- have your data deleted
- ask us to limit some uses of it, or object to them
- get your data in a common format to take elsewhere
- take back your consent at any time
- complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission at ndpc.gov.ng
To use these rights, write to [email protected] from the email address on your account. We aim to reply within 30 days.
Recording other people
Ask your lecturer before you record, and follow your school's rules: some schools don't allow recording. Your recordings will catch your classmates' voices too, and their voices are personal data as well. Keep recordings for your own study and your class on Bantefa, and never post them anywhere.
Lecturers can ask for a class's notes to come down on our page for lecturers.
Children
Bantefa is made for university and college students. If you're under 18, you need your parent's or guardian's OK to use it.
Keeping it safe
Everything travels encrypted between your phone, this website and our server. Sign-in tokens are stored on our server only as one-way codes. If a breach puts your data at risk, we'll tell the Nigeria Data Protection Commission within 72 hours, and we'll tell you.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll tell you in the app before the change applies, and ask again where your consent is needed.
